Editorial Policy
Last updated:
MoneyRanked.com is committed to providing honest, independent, and accurate information to help UK consumers make better financial decisions. This page explains exactly how we produce our content, how we score financial products, and how commercial relationships are managed so they never compromise the integrity of our editorial work.
Our promise: Every rating, ranking, and recommendation on MoneyRanked.com is produced independently by our editorial team. Advertisers and affiliate partners have no influence over how products are scored, ranked, or described. If we believe a product isn’t right for consumers, we say so — regardless of whether we have a commercial relationship with the provider.
1. Our Review Methodology
Every financial product reviewed on MoneyRanked.com is evaluated using a structured, consistent framework. Our reviewers assess each product across five core criteria, ensuring that comparisons between products are fair, repeatable, and meaningful for real consumers.
- Fees & Costs — We examine all charges associated with a product, including account fees, transaction costs, interest rates, penalties, and any hidden or conditional charges that may affect the total cost to the consumer.
- Features & Benefits — We assess what the product actually offers: interest rates, cashback, rewards, tools, integrations, account types, and any value-adding features that differentiate it from competitors.
- Ease of Use — We evaluate the application process, onboarding experience, day-to-day usability of the product or platform, quality of the mobile app (where applicable), and how easy it is to manage the product over time.
- Customer Service — We consider the availability and quality of support channels (phone, chat, email, in-branch), response times, independent customer satisfaction data, and complaint resolution track records.
- Safety & Regulation — We verify the provider’s regulatory status with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and/or Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), FSCS deposit protection eligibility, and any material concerns about financial stability or data security.
In addition to these five criteria, reviewers may note product-specific considerations — for example, eligibility restrictions, minimum deposit requirements, or geographic limitations relevant to UK consumers.
2. How Our 0–10 Ratings Work
Each product receives an overall MoneyRanked Score between 0.0 and 10.0. This score is calculated using a weighted average of the five criteria scores, reflecting the relative importance of each factor to the average UK consumer.
Scoring weights:
- Fees & Costs — 30%: The biggest single factor. For most consumers, the cost of a product has the greatest impact on long-term value.
- Features & Benefits — 25%: What you get for your money matters. Strong features can offset moderate costs.
- Ease of Use — 20%: A product that’s difficult to manage, apply for, or navigate loses practical value, however competitive its rates.
- Customer Service — 15%: Access to quality support becomes critical when things go wrong. We weight this meaningfully but below core product factors.
- Safety & Regulation — 10%: Most products we review operate within robust UK regulatory frameworks. This criterion accounts for edge cases and meaningful differences in consumer protection.
Each criterion is scored from 0 to 10 by the lead reviewer using documented scoring rubrics. Scores are reviewed by a second editor before publication. The weighted formula is applied consistently across all products in a given category — for example, current accounts are not scored against the same rubric as investment platforms, as consumer priorities differ by product type.
A score of 8.0 or above indicates an excellent product that performs strongly across most criteria. A score of 6.0–7.9 indicates a solid product with some notable strengths and moderate weaknesses. Scores below 6.0 indicate products we believe have significant limitations for most consumers.
3. Who Writes Our Reviews
All reviews on MoneyRanked.com are produced by our independent editorial team. Our writers and analysts have backgrounds in personal finance, financial journalism, consumer banking, and regulated financial services.
- Reviewers are employed or contracted directly by MoneyRanked.com and are not employed by, or affiliated with, any financial product provider.
- No advertiser, affiliate partner, or product provider has any right to review, amend, approve, or influence editorial content before or after publication.
- Reviewers disclose any personal financial relationships with products they review; where a conflict of interest exists, a different reviewer is assigned.
- Our editorial team operates under a separate reporting structure to our commercial and partnerships teams. These teams do not communicate about individual product scores or rankings.
Author names and, where relevant, professional credentials are displayed on each review page. If you have a question about a specific reviewer’s qualifications, you are welcome to contact us at [email protected].
4. Update Frequency
Financial products change frequently. We maintain a structured review calendar to ensure that the information we publish remains accurate and useful.
- Major reviews — Full editorial reviews, including scores and narrative content, are updated on a quarterly basis (every three months) as a minimum. Reviews may be updated earlier if a significant product change occurs.
- Rates and key figures — Interest rates, fees, and other frequently changing data points are reviewed and updated on a monthly basis.
- Breaking changes — If a provider makes a material change to a product (such as a significant fee increase, a change in FSCS protection status, or a regulatory action), we aim to reflect this in our content within 5 business days of becoming aware of it.
- Date stamps — Every review page displays the date it was originally published and the date it was most recently reviewed or updated, so readers can assess the currency of information.
5. How Commercial Relationships Work
MoneyRanked.com earns revenue through affiliate marketing arrangements. This means that when a user clicks on certain links and subsequently applies for or opens a financial product, MoneyRanked.com may receive a commission from the product provider. This is how we fund our editorial operations.
Important: The existence of an affiliate relationship with a provider does never influence a product’s MoneyRanked Score, its ranking position, the editorial content of its review, or its inclusion or exclusion from comparison tables. Products are ranked by score alone. A product with no commercial relationship will rank above a product we earn commission on if its score is higher — and this happens regularly.
- Pages that contain affiliate links are clearly labelled with a disclosure notice, in compliance with FCA guidance and ASA/CAP rules on affiliate marketing transparency.
- Our commercial team negotiates affiliate arrangements with providers; our editorial team is not involved in these discussions and is not informed of commission rates for individual products.
- Some products we review may not have any affiliate arrangement in place. We include them because they are relevant to UK consumers.
- We do not accept payment, free products, or hospitality from providers in exchange for editorial coverage or favourable reviews.
6. Correction Policy
We take accuracy seriously. Despite our best efforts, errors can occur. When they do, we correct them promptly and transparently.
- Response time: We aim to correct verified factual errors within 48 hours of being notified or becoming aware of them.
- Transparency: All corrections are recorded with a date stamp on the relevant page, noting that the content has been updated and, where material, what was changed.
- Scope: Our correction policy applies to factual inaccuracies — such as incorrect rates, incorrect regulatory information, or inaccurate product descriptions. Editorial judgements (such as scores or opinions) are not subject to correction at a provider’s request, though they are subject to our regular review cycle.
- Reporting errors: If you believe you have found an error in our content, please contact us at [email protected] with the relevant URL and details of the potential error. We investigate all reports.
7. Product Selection
MoneyRanked.com aims to provide comprehensive, useful comparisons for UK consumers. Our approach to deciding which products to include is guided by the following principles:
- We prioritise products that are available to a broad UK consumer audience, including products that may suit specific needs (such as those for people with limited credit history or non-standard employment).
- Products must be offered by FCA-authorised or FCA-registered firms operating lawfully in the UK. We do not review or list products from unauthorised providers.
- We aim to include the most relevant and widely used products in each category. Our goal is not to be exhaustive but to be useful — focusing on the products that most consumers are likely to encounter or benefit from considering.
- Inclusion does not imply endorsement. A product appearing on MoneyRanked.com means only that our editorial team has assessed it as relevant to include. It does not mean we recommend it for all consumers.
- Providers may contact us to request that their product is considered for inclusion. Such requests are assessed on merit by our editorial team. A provider requesting inclusion does not guarantee it, and we do not accept payment for inclusion.
8. What We Don’t Do
In the interest of complete transparency, the following practices are explicitly prohibited at MoneyRanked.com and do not form any part of how we operate:
- We do not accept payment for higher rankings. No provider can pay to have their product ranked above competitors in our comparison tables or “best of” lists. Rankings are determined solely by MoneyRanked Score.
- We do not publish sponsored content labelled as editorial reviews. If content is paid for or produced in partnership with a provider, it is clearly labelled as “Sponsored” or “In Partnership With” and is distinct from our independent editorial reviews. Sponsored content is never assigned a MoneyRanked Score.
